The Sierra de las Nieves is a veritable natural paradise at the heart of the province of Malaga. It is bordered to the south by the western Costa del Sol, to the east by the Guadalhorce Valley, to the west by the Serrania de Ronda and to the north by the Guadalteba area.
The area is home to the following municipalities: Alozaina, Casarabonela, El Burgo, Guaro, Istan, Monda, Ojen, Tolox and Yunquera.
These nine villages still retain the appearance given to them by the melting pot of different cultures that have left their mark here over the centuries. These villages share the often capricious orography of the Sierra, as well a series of physiographical and cultural features that have combined to produce an area with an identity all of its own within the province of Malaga.
This is essentially a rural mountain area in which a perfect balance still prevails between man and nature, creating an ecological and cultural model worthy of imitation.
Economically speaking, the local populace is largely employed in the construction and service sectors, having remained in the area largely due to the secondary contribution made by agriculture, an activity that is concentrated mainly in the inland villages, where transport links with the coast are not so strong. However, until recent years, most of the population were employed in the textile industry.
A tour of the nine villages that make up this rural enclave reveals the importance of a rich ecological and cultural heritage that has remained intact over the years, festivals, culinary know-how, events and experiences which remain engraved on the memory even today. It is here that we find the key to culture and heritage in the Sierra de las Nieves, the discovery and appreciation of a whole cultural identity, of values which have not been contrived but rather passed down from generation to generation, from old to young, and which still survive today to be shared and enjoyed both symbolically and publicly in these mountain villages, in spite of the modern times in which we now live.
